Pragmatic Marketing Publishes 11th Annual Product Management and Product Marketing in Technology Survey

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., February 11, 2011– Pragmatic Marketing published the 11th Annual Product Management and Product Marketing Survey providing results from the largest industry survey of its kind. The survey focuses on the responsibilities for each of the 37 marketing activities addressed in the Pragmatic Marketing Framework.

“The Annual Product Management and Product Marketing Survey has become a bellwether for how organizations deploy the Pragmatic Marketing Framework” said Craig Stull, CEO and Founder of Pragmatic Marketing. “As a provider of product management and product marketing training to over 70,000 alumni and 6,000 companies, it’s exciting to see how the industry is evolving. The market driven movement is clearly seen driving competitive advantages for software and hardware companies.”

The survey results are used for career planning, identifying corporate education for marketing teams, and by human resources teams to develop a common understanding of the activities and roles for technology marketers.

Key insights from the survey:

  • Product management and product marketing professionals are getting a seat at the table: Nearly one third of respondents report into a dedicated department for their job, versus being part of some other silo
  • Ownership of important activities remains confusing: Overlap in key activities such as developing positioning documents continue to drive organizational confusion
  • Job titles are beginning to settle: While job titles in the industry remain a mess, two titles are emerging as most commonly used: “product manager” and “product marketing manager”
